With the establishment of a Center of Innovation Competence (ZIK) two young scientist teams will be integrated into the Center for Micro- and Nanotechnologies (ZMN). The ZMN is the central scientific facility of the TU Ilmenau with about 80 coworkers and is committed to both, basic and applied research. The modern equipment and the variety of technological and analytical options allow for the materials development and the patterning in the microscopic and the nanoscopic scale to end up with complete ready to use devices and systems serving as demonstrators for the industrial utilization. The focus of today's scientific interest lies in the fields of smart materials, MEMS technology, microperipherics, nanoanalytics, nanopositioning, sensor applications, and polymer electronics.
These activities will be extended and strengthened by the approved Center of Innovation Competence with the help of the two Junior Research groups. They focus on the two research topics "Microfluidics and Biosensorics", as well as "Functionalized Peripherics". Thus, a complex analytical System for single molecules or living cells in minimal liquid volumes, as well as a modular back end technology on a silicon and/or ceramics basis will be developed, taking advantage of the already available technologies and materials in the ZMN. These activities will lead to applications in medical, biological or pharmacological fields, as well as modern high frequency and high power electronics.
