New Prospects for the Optical Industry - Rathenow

Topic

The optical technologies represent one of the key cross-disciplinary technologies of the 21st century. Within the metropolitan region of Berlin-Brandenburg the optical industry represents one of the key growth areas.

Two important topics at the centre of the Forum:

  • The use of innovative materials opens the way for new applications within ophthalmic optics. Technological innovation and the establishement of new national and international markets for small and medium-sized optics companies will be promoted within the network "Centre of Competence - Optics Rathenow".

  • X-ray light is one of the key aspects of microsystems- and nano-technologies. Additionally X-ray analytical methods represent one of the most powerful and reliable means of investigation of materials and surfaces. The future development of X-ray optical technologies requires co-operation between scientific and production partners (for example from the field of electron-beam-lithography). The consolidation of the scientific and manufacturing competences into the Network "Centre of X-ray Optical Systems" should stimulate entry into the international market.

Objectives

  • Development and strengthening of the market-oriented networks "KOR" and "ZeROS" by consolidation of the technological fields ophthalmic optics and X-ray optics
  • Identification and presentation of new materials for use in ophthalmic optics as well as X-ray optics; creation of new business segments and markets
  • Identification of new partners from science and industry for increasing the competence within the two networks
  • Use of the results of combination of science and technology to enhance the potential for regional innovation

Knowledge

The Trend
The high demands set by the optical technologies market make it imperative that companies demonstrate increased willingness towards innovation in order to remain in the market long-term. Success in establishing new products and markets can only be realised through cooperation between industry and R&D within networks. The key to long-term success lies in the common benefits for each member of the network.

Regional Competence
The metropolitan region Berlin-Brandenburg has a strong potential to develop optical technology as a key technology within Germany: it possesses the highest concentration of high schools and research facilities in the republic and a high level of uptake of the results of the latest research by technologically-oriented large-scale, medium and small-scale enterprises.
